Training Manufacturing – Being with your tribe.

Until recently, I never understood what this was.. It sounded a bit trite or hokey. So let me tell you what happened.. I recently receive a letter from The School of Fashion Design in Boston inviting me to a breakfast function for successful alums. I has honored and fascinated to see what was going on. I didn’t know what to expect, since I had not been in touch for years. I had been thinking that I wanted to teach again and mentor to be able to share all the things that I had learned over the years of doing handbag design, apparel design and apparel manufacturing.

Part of our discussion focused on training for apparel design, but also how important it is to have training in manufacturing and how our technicals were such an asset.

Of course, there are no coincidences in the Universe, I had just finished a 7 Step Program To Do It Right the First Time geared towards small businesses and entrepreneurs needing consulting and mentoring in developing a product, line development and the business planning specifically aimed at the apparel and accessory industries. It was wonderfully received among my colleagues and I will be speaking on a panel to the graduating class on how varied the opportunities are for them upon graduating.

It was amazing to sit in a room with 22 professionals, all of us receiving the same education.. and how varied the careers were within a very specific field: From mass production merchants like TJX, or designing and making couture evening dresses/ bridal gowns to uniforms that will withstand chemical warfare. There was so much that was unspoken, a sense of understanding of who you were and I began to understand the importance of my passions and identity. To be with like minded people, see people living their dreams was very inspiring…. I realized how important it is to spend time with My Tribe.
